Vincent d'Indy's atmospheric légende-symphonique 'The Enchanted Forest' is inspired by an epic German ballad and owes more to Wagner than his own Gallic roots.

Delius too was a master of the expressive moment and his Double Concerto is a work of intense lyricsm. Benjamin Nabarro (violin), praised for his concerto performances, and Gemma Rosefield (cello), described as 'a mesmerising musical treasure' also perform the attractive duo by Saint-Saëns.

Scriabin's The Poem of Ecstasy, first heard in 1908, is diverse and fluid in its mood and lavish in its orchestration. Described by Henry Miller as 'like a bath of ice, cocaine and rainbows' it was broadcast in 1961 by the Soviet authorities to celebrate the launch of the first manned space craft to orbit the earth.
